What would Stradivari ask us here in MAESTRONET?

Here some possibilities:

1 - What is mineral ground?

2- What is a catenary?

3 - What is plate tuning?

4 - What is mode 1 and 5?

5 - Why some of you spring the bar?

6 - Why so many scientific researchs about my simple and humble work?

5 - Why there are so many soloists playing violins by Catarina Guarneri?

6 - What do I do with my Omobono? How can I make him work?

7 - What is damping?

8 - Are nanoparticles dangerous?

9 - Who are these Hills? How can they criticize my violas in such way?

10 - Do you know something more profitable today than violin making?

I saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie last night, which wasn’t as awful as I had been told.

Anyway, there was one line, uttered by the Dr. Watson character, that reminded me of many Maestronet threads; I have willingly participated in some of them. But in light of Manfio’s thread here, I can imagine Stradivari saying it.

“It looks like he was attempting to combine some kind of sorcery and scientific formula.”

You could ask him these questions in a differnet way. Your questions make assumptions he may not understand:

1 - Do you use water-derived stuff?
2- Where is your recurve placed, why?
3- Do you wrap a plate to adjust for stiffness?
4- Do you hear more than one pitch if you do this
5. Does not apply, not for short bars.
6 We are curious....
7- What most makes your violins sound like throwing a rug over them
8. Are you worried about health, or do you let apprentices do the dangerous things
9. Do you use the same "principles" to make a viola as a violin ? Are violists as fussy as violinists? Are violinists fussy, for that matter?
10- Are you a sharp businessman? Or just a sincere craftsman?

Strad would probably ask us why we are still making violins and remind us that his iphone alternative is outselling the Apple product 3 to 1.

Strad might ask for: a pair of sneakers, a UV drying box, and the latest copy of a power tools catalog.

Does anyone know a good lawyer?

It might, but the irony is in the assumption that most people know what they want.
