Sprung Cello Bow Heel Plate

09 May 2011 - 05:19 AM

Gents,
Don't know if this ype of qustion has appeared on the forum before. I have a Silver Mounted Cello Bow with a rounded heel plate. The Plate is secured with two pins. One at the top back just below the shoe and one on the frog underside adjacent to the pearl slide. The plate has sprung from the frog the head of the pin has been sheared off leaving the remainder of the pin below the plate. The upper pin is still secured. At first this seemed a straightforward problem until I started thinking about it and the dangers involved. Making and securing a new pin is no problem. The problem for me is getting to and removing the remainder of the old pin without bending or damaging the heel plate. There seems no obvious way to get to the pin without removal of the heel plate. Does anyone know of any ingenious ways of dealing with this ?

Sheared Bow Screw

04 April 2011 - 07:56 AM

Ladies and Gents,

I have a bow with a sheared adjusting screw in the workshop and am looking for some ideas on how best to remove the remainder of the screw. The Screw is seriously rusted and has broken off about one inch down its length. The remainder of the screw completely seized in the brass eye and the Frog is currently in a fixed position and won't budge.
The bow is a nice German Pernambuco stick with Tortoiseshell Frog (Tortoiseshell exterior side walls grafted to Ebony interior - you've probably seen this type of frog before). The stick has a crack at the butt end running to the end of the stick.
Hence am looking for any tips on how best to get the remainder of the screw out and get the frog off the stick. I've seen Lucchi's website which suggests a sort of rod with a grip at the end to grab the remainder of the screw but I'm not sure this will work in this case due to the seized nature of the problem.
A method that occurs is to cut out the bottom part of the butt end of the stick , which is where the crack is, to enable me to slide the frog out at the end (hope I've explained this correctly). I can then glue the broken parts back to the stick once the frog is removed and bush the lower and if necessary upper holes etc etc...(am going to have to do this anyway due to the butt end crack). However this is a bit of surgery which I'd prefer to avoid if at all possible.
I'm new to the forum, this is my first post , so any assistance or alternative ideas / methods will be much appreciated. I can supply photos if necessary.
