About Me
Hello,
I am a professional sculptor as well as an instructor in drawing, sculpture, and Moldmaking/Casting/Woodworking. I currently teach at several local colleges while maintaining a private sculpture studio at home. I run a small business as a moldmaker and caster for local artists. I usually make silicone molds and cast copies of sculptures in resin, plaster, wax, pewter, and bronze. Been doing that for about 10 years now.
On the music side of things, I've been a Violist/Violinist for almost 20 years. At one time I was a music major in college before I switched over to art. I have kept up playing though. It was through a few "accidents" I had with my personal instruments that led me to looking into fixing them myself. Since then, I recognize that I do have a genuine passion for instrument repair, albeit not as a business. So far I haven't been able to bring myself to sell what I've restored. Perhaps that will change once my violin collection gets harder to hide easily.... I'm constantly on the lookout for neglected instruments that I can bring back to life. Recently, I've decided to build my first instrument, and have almost finished gathering tools and materials to do so. I plan to make a copy of the "Conte Vitale" viola by Guarneri. Seems like since I'm a Violist first, I should make a viola first. I will be sure to start a thread blog of my process when I begin.
In the meantime, you can check out my sculpture at www.jdavisgallery.com
