I have some willow I was planning to make some blocks and linings from. What concerns me is the growth rings in the timber - they seem to be about 1cm apart. What does this say about the wood?
I've figured out that oil based varnishes are generally preferred for violins, but my researches into how to start the process have left me somewhat baffled. My questions are:
1. What is the function of the ground? Is it necessary? What is the preferred method of applying it?
2. What is the preferred method for applying the first coat of varnish?
