I'd look at Shar Music. I also agree that you should buy a better than 'student' instrument. For 1500-2000 you should be able to find something nice enough.

I like the Mighty Mini, which isn't a mike but a pickup. Easy to hook up and requires no alteration to the instrument, sounds good, and doesn't pick up any extraneous noise.

I would imagine half position would be hard. I was under the impression that the fretted fiddles I posted were student instruments.

the threads at the back of the neck may have been for mounting it on a band box.

Have to admit warning bells go off when I see listings like this, although it's a recent cert and I'd think it would be easy enough to check out it's authenticity.
