I thought this could serve as a warning to those who take on a restoration without the relevant experience.
Like a scene from a Mr. Bean movie. :(

The once-dignified portrait now resembles a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic

Should have logged in to Fresco-net to get advice.

Having said that the painting was obviously not deemed worth enough to be kept in good shape, and it was left to deteriorate without anybody doing anything about it. Now this old woman probably succeeded in making it famous enough so that money will be found, or some anonymous restorer will agree, to put the painting back to its original state.

Ouch.

Having been involved in restoration... that was painful.

Note to Bean: use the mildest solvents first.

It's a massive improvement on the tediously derivative original. And I'm sure it looks more like the real Jesus, with that lovely, vacant smile. It's so lifelike, the way the eyes follow you round the room, one slightly behind the other. Magnificent.

If you look carefully in the face repaired, this reflects the enormous compassion for all of us.

It's a miracle!

Oh no! Who did that?

Da Vinci on a hangover day?
People are still talking about the fresco, and as I had anticipated, some restorers have been called to see if a restoration was possible. Note that until this story got out nobody had ever heard about the painting or indeed the painter. You know this is exactly the kind of story that attracts publicity, and I would not be surprised to learn that it was arranged right from the start.
Incidentaly I also read that a petition was launch to leave the fresco the way it is now... :)
