Hi,
Thanks for the video!
It wouldbe interesting to watch and listen to the maestro Paganini plaing it!! I read a description of his playing somewher. He usually finished up with one or two strings! Perhaps the plates are too thick? :)

The occasion was special as it was the 50th anniverary of his first prize win in the Paganini Competition at the age if 17 in 1958. In the video he is 67 years of age.

I wonder how much time he had to get accustomed to the instrument. I bet it's a bear to play.

About 45 minutes but it's not the first time he played it.

He seemed out of practice to me. Was this done at a moment's notice ?

I wonder if most musicians who get to try il Cannone find it challenging to play?

I know that the Del Gesu violins I've had an opportunity to play I found them all very difficult except the Kreisler DG.

I've also noticed that even when accomplished violinists play on a DG, the instrument often does not sound very good under the ear but fantastic to everyone else.

What can one say ...

I wonder what it would sound like if the wood was a bit thinner...
(I would put in the hornet's nest emoticon if I had one)
Making fiddles ain't rocket science... it's much more complicated.

Whenever it is needed but on the average once or twice a year.

Apart from Del Gesu, who else (famous of course) make such thick plates violins?

This playing isn't even near as bad as it seems the first time you watch the video. In fact, it is quite good. Few people nail the campanella, and Accardo's crunchy style of playing some Paganini is exacerbated by the poor video.
