Can anyone direct me to a location where I can find/buy plans for a viola da gamaba? Relatively speaking, how difficult would it be to make a viola da gamba as compared to a cello? I have been fascinated with the sound of the gamba for some time and have thoughts about building one.

For plans, you can give a look on instrument's museums, many of them sell plans.

As far as difficulty in making compared with the cello, you have a flat back in the Gamba that is easyier to make. On the other hand, in general makers make their own fingerboards and tailpieces, that are bought ready made in the case of celli. But in general, I thik making a Gamba is easyier than a cello.

Hi Terry--

Long time ...

I remember that I bought a set of gamba plans--I think from the Kelischek Workshop when I was a lot younger. (I didn't make the gamba and I have no idea what happened to the plans.) I just looked at their website http://www.susato.com and didn't see anything about their currently offering plans for sale. But, they might be a good start.
